RTTY Digital Journal in new hands
---------------------------------
The RTTY Digital Journal has been sold to the American Digital
Radio Society (ADRS). This society has made a statement of its
aims, as below -
The principal goal of the American Digital Radio Society
is to advance digital technology as it applies to Amateur
Radio and to promote the wisest use of the digital portion
of the amateur radio spectrum. The ADRS best serves the
global fraternity by enhancing the opportunities for all who
chose to explore the digital modes.
The editor is unchanged, being Dale Sinner W6IWO, but both the
publisher, Jim Mortenson N2HOS, and Director of Marketing, Jay
Townsend, WS7I are new to the publication.
All the regular features are continuing, so really only the
ownership has changed. It is seen as the voice of the digital
radio fraternity, may it flourish and be heard.

Some news from VK6
------------------
It was sad to note, the resignation of RON,VK6RF from the
group. Ron has been a long time member of W.A.A.D.C.A , a
supporter of R.T.T.Y. and the sunday morning broadcasts. It is
hoped you continue to listen , and report in on occasions
please RON.
A new PACKET RADIO user port is to be installed at WIRELESS
HILL PARK. The operating frequency will be 144.825. This will
supplement the users on this channel , as well as provide
better traffic loading between channels.
R.T.T.Y. MAIL BOX
------------------
The Technical Officer JOE VK6ZTN still has to find the time
from his busy schedule to modify the fm 880 transceiver for
the R.T.T.Y. mailbox to become operational.
Finally a big THANK YOU TO PHIL VK6ADF .
Phil has had to resign from the committee of W.A.D.C.A. due to
other committments , Phil has been a tireless worker
for the group . your absence will be surely be missed Phil.

OK, now while you're busy making these nifty tests, how about taking a
50 foot piece of RG-213 and putting a pair of UHF and then N connectors
on it. Test it again, and tell me just how much difference it really
makes. Run the tests at 146 and 450 MHz.
When you get finished with this, come back and tell us just how much RF
is lost by that "terrible" UHF connector. And just how bad it makes a
known 50 ohm load look at the other end of the cable.

Subject: FT-530 Firmware Problems (epilogue)
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
This is a post of an item I deposited on Compu$erve's HAMNET forum:
Well I just received my re-repaired FT-530 back today. As I had promised
earlier, here is the finally summary of what was done and the cost if it
is out of warranty. Please note that my radio is Lot #16. All FT-530's
that I have played with suffer from the DTMF code squelch problem:
1) Page Acknowledgment will not turn on:
Item G2070088 (Diode 1SS302 TE85R) was installed. Price 23 cents.
Labor $50. Shipping $6.58.
Note: I believe the Page Acknowledgment may be a problem only if the
radio has had the receive range extended by removing the jumper on pad 13.
After talking to several other hams, it would seem to be that only
those radios that were modified suffer from this (not conclusive). The
fact that a diode needs to be added would seem to confirm this.
2) DTMF code squelch only decodes first 2 digits:
"REPLACED DEFECTIVE CPU IC, ADJUSTED AND TESTED UNIT'S OPERATIONS TO
FACTORY SPECIFICATIONS." That's what the work order says!
Labor $150. Shipping $5.99.
I have tested the radio so far and it seems to work fine. In fact, 2-meter
sensitivity seems better than it was before!

Subject: HAMBLASTER INCORRECT STATEMENTS
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
Howdy:
In a recent spate of messages, we have been told of the capabilities
of the hamblaster. It sounds rudimentary so far but I am sure that
over time the capabilities (new software development) will proceed
and its capabilities will be enhanced and it will make a very
interesting tool for amateur radio communications, experimentation,
and learning DSP. There will be alternatives as you will now be told.
In other messages, John Alberts has told us of the lack of capabilities
of the Sound Blaster 16 with ASP. He is WRONG. I received my Sound
Blaster developers kit via UPS yesterday at last. It is easy to see
how John could have made the mistake he made. The manuals received
in the kit describe two distinct pieces of processing hardware.
One is called the DSP and the other is the ASP. The DSP has all
the limitations mentioned by John in his statements concerning
the capabilities of the Sound Blaster card (or lack thereof). It is
a proprietary gate array surrounding masks from other chip developers
to do stuff like DMA blocks of samples in and out, to convert PCM
to u-LAW, 2 or 4 bit ADPCM, CVSD, etc. It directs the flow of
MIDI commands, etc. It is a pretty neat thing in and of itself
but it is NOT what we want. We want a full blown DSP chip, with
a modified Harvard architecture and at least 16 by 16 bit -> 32 multiply,
accumulate, read new coefficient and data in one instruction time.
THE ASP is a real DSP chip and has all this. It is 512 words of off
chip program memory, 512 words of off chip data ram, 192 words of X RAM
on chip,128 words of Y ram on chip. X ram is program and sample
data, Y RAM would be used for filter coefficients. THIS IS A FULL
BLOWN DSP CHIP. It does NOT have the limitations John has told us
the hamblaster overcomes. Indeed, on the A/D, D/A front, it is quite
clear that the under $300 SB16-ASP is quite a bit MORE CAPABLE than
hamblaster. It has two channels (16 bits each), D/A, and A/D. The
sample rate is completely controllable by uploading a divisor to
the control register. The lowest available rate is 5 Khz and the
highest is 44.1 Khz. The processor runs at 12 MIPS so filters would
execute at around 25 MIPS. This is because it has the typical
DSP feature of multiply two numbers, read the next two, and accumulate
the last result while shifting the pointers in two instruction times.
That is plenty fast. I will be able to do dual channel modems for this
card. Since the thing does not also have a UART, or SIO, we will have
to the HDLC and UART functions on the chip when required. Other DSP
developers have done this all on chip (Finland DSP development group
on the Motorola DSP56001). We will be able to do a lot.
John should be more careful when he makes flat statements about
commercially available products. If he were a `real competitor'
of Creative Labs, he could get into a bit of a hassle. I am following the
philosophy of my dear friend, Phil Karn, in attributing to ignorance
when possible, that which could be attributed to malice (in this
case, competition). I told John in a reply to his mail that I
doubted the accuracy of his statements on the Sound Blaster16 with ASP.
I was correct. The Sound Blaster 16 with ASP is available from many
places for under $300. The developers kit is $99, available only
from Creative Labs. In addition to this, you must have a dsp assembler.
The developer's kit provides COMPLETE tools for uploading and
downloading programs to the ASP chip.
I will be writing programs for the ASP and giving them away on your
favorite ftp sites and through the ARRL download request service.
These programs will be the basis of articles for QEX describing the
algorithms and the operation of the sound blaster card in amateur
radio applications. Phil Karn has devised a new link layer for
packet, with FEC, etc. and I will be providing modems that use the
ASP. I believe I can provide what the latest hamblaster announcements
state and more in short order after I get the assembler for the
ASP. I will do this as quickly as possible. I am a bit miffed that I
stopped developing the Windows and DOS front ends and display stuff for
the SB16 ASP after John's note because I thought the SB16 was too
limited. Now it is full steam ahead.

Subject: Need club contact or Elmer in the Fort Worth area
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
I'm looking for an Elmer in the Fort Worth area. My brother
called me the other day to say that while attending a training
session for his employer in Oaklahoma one of his classmates had
shown him a two meter hand held and told him about the fact that
there was no longer a code requirement for the techincian
license. I think he is hooked!
I advised him to go down to the local Radio Shack and pick
up the "Lets talk radio" package. He has a scanner and I gave
him several two meter frequencies to plug in and it occured to me
that I might be able to find a contact or club in his area that
would help him out. If you know of someone who could help him
get started please drop me email and I'll put the two of you
together. The work load as of late has not let me keep up with
net news so please respond via mail. Thanks.

No, I don't think your out of place. Would one send a nude QSL to a foreign
country? I certainly hope not. In some counties they would be banned and
could get the recieving ham in trouble. Besides, what sort of image are
you presenting for the U.S.? If you would not send one to a foriegn country,
why send one to a U.S. ham. Some would definitely be offended, othere would
think you a jerk at best. Go get a W4MPY or WA6AHF QSL, or one with you

Come on, nobody is forcing QSL cards on the world. If you, as a nude ham,
have a nude QSL card, you should by reasonable standards of politeness,
inform the person on the other end during your QSO. If he objects, send
him a non-nude QSL. If you're doing serious DX and you don't have time
to inform anyone of this, you ought to either slow down and do some
ragchewing or send a non-nude one out by default. Sheesh. This is a
non-issue that isn't worth debating here.

back on before doing any serious ragchewing...)

A guy in Florida was hand carrying cards to YV for awhile and was able to
get YX0AI cars back with some regularity. Check the guys on INDEXA (14236

Nope, as others have mentioned. A couple of green stamps should do it. My
feeling is that if I need the card...right or wrong, I'll send the bucks.

Welcome to Internet (Bitnet, Compuserve, ...) the public forum for the 21st
century, with no filtering by the news media.
I find myself using e-mail and news more and more, and the phone less and
less.
I've built a few of Mr. Ramsey's kits. I liked and still use the 2m amp,
and our research project sent two of the FX-440's to Uzbekistan for an
RF data link. I did not check the spectral purity of the outputs, but
the Uzbekis don't really use the 440 MHz range, so we don't forsee any
problems.
After the local dealer had removed one of the circuit boards from one of
kits, Mr. Ramsey FedEx'ed me a new board, no charge.
